9 virtues

Members of the the Vanguard seek to be living embodiments of the 9 Virtues. They seek to encourage Caetari followers to follow them as well.

COURAGE

You must have enough conviction in your beliefs to stand for what you believe and live your life by your own code. This does not mean that you act in rash and tactless ways. There is a difference in being courageous and in being stupid. Have the courage to live by your own code of honor, but do so with wisdom and discretion. Hiding like a turtle in a shell is not living at all. A true warrior must have heroic courage. It is absolutely risky. It is living life completely, fully and wonderfully. Heroic courage is not blind. It is intelligent and strong.

The test of courage comes when we are in the minority.
Emerson

Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway
John Wayne

TRUTH

Truth is the state of being in accordance with fact or reality. It is sincerity in action, character, and utterance. Having the quality of being free from pretense, deceit, or hypocrisy. Being honest to one’s self and to others. You should have enough confidence in your beliefs and your actions to be truthful. Truth is simply being honest about what you believe or know to be true and right. Sometimes lying is the right thing to do. Lying is permitted if you are being lied to.

There should be truth in thought,
truth in speech, and truth in action.
Gandhi

One who is without truth can never be trusted.

HONOR

You determine your own honor, or lack of honor, by staying true to your own beliefs and living according to your own code of honor. It is the warrior who determines his or her honor; your reputation is determined by other people’s thoughts, for the most part.

Honor is a harder master than the law.
Mark Twain

Our own heart, and not other men’s opinion, form our true honor.
Samuel Coleridge

Better it is to die in battle with honor, than to live in shame because you did not defend your people.

FIDELITY/LOYALTY

Fidelity as used in the Nine Noble Virtues refers to being faithful or loyal to God, to yourself and your beliefs, to your family, and to your friends. The quality of being faithful and maintaining a firm adherence to one’s own moral values.

Be slow to give your friendship,
but when you have given it,
strive to make it lasting.
Isocrates

DISCIPLINE

Discipline is the suppression of base desires with restraint and self-control. To stay the course and have the strength to maintain what must be done, even when you don’t want to. The true warrior lives according to his own code, rather than according to what corrupt politicians or cultural standards dictate. This means that he must exercise a great deal of self-discipline.

What lies in our power to do,
it lies in our power not to do.
Aristotle

HOSPITALITY

The warrior is expected to treat others with respect and dignity.

It is the task of a good man to help those in misfortune.
Sophocles

INDUSTRIOUSNESS

Industriousness simply means the willingness to work hard at whatever you do. If something is worth doing, do it well.

He preaches well that lives well.
Cervantes

SELF RELIANCE

Self Reliance is the state of reliance on oneself or one’s own powers and resources by not requiring any aid, support, or interaction of others for survival. Self reliance is the state of personal independence. The warrior is responsible for taking care of himself and his family; this is his first and foremost duty in life.

PERSEVERANCE

No one is perfect and you will make mistakes. In order to live the warrior lifestyle, you cannot simply give up and quit when you fall short of your mark. You must persevere. You must not give up.Try and try again until you get it done. Not losing heart and simply giving up or taking the easy way out.

There is nothing impossible to him who will try.
Alexander the Great
